What JCI accreditation is

Joint Commission International (JCI) is the international arm of the body that accredits hospitals in the United States. JCI accreditation is a voluntary, triennial audit against more than 1,200 measurable standards covering patient identification, infection control, surgical safety, medication management and emergency response.

Around 50 hospitals in Turkey hold current JCI accreditation — a higher concentration than any country outside the United States. Istanbul accounts for the majority. Accreditation is not a marketing label; failed audits cost hospitals the accreditation, and recertification fails are public.

What JCI actually audits

  • Patient identification protocols — wristbands, two-identifier checks before any procedure or medication.
  • WHO Surgical Safety Checklist usage in every theatre case.
  • Infection control surveillance with mandatory reporting and root-cause analysis.
  • Medication reconciliation at admission, transfer and discharge.
  • 24/7 cardiac arrest team availability with documented response times.
  • Anaesthesia equipment maintenance logs and back-up power for life-support equipment.
  • Staff credentialing — every doctor's qualifications are independently verified.

Why it matters for plastic surgery specifically

Plastic surgery deaths abroad are almost always preventable, and almost always trace back to either an unqualified surgeon or an inadequately equipped facility. JCI accreditation does not vet the surgeon's skill, but it eliminates the second category entirely.

When you operate in a JCI hospital, you have intensive care available within minutes, qualified anaesthetists rather than nurse anaesthetists, monitored recovery beds, and an emergency response system that meets US standards. This is the safety floor every international patient should insist on.

Dr. Barutcu operates exclusively in JCI-accredited Istanbul hospitals. The hospital name and accreditation status are confirmed in writing in your consultation summary before any deposit is taken.

SSS

Sıkça sorulan sorular

How do I check if a hospital is JCI-accredited?+

Visit jointcommissioninternational.org and use the public accredited organisation search. The certificate must be current and the hospital name should match exactly.

Is JCI better than ISO certification?+

For surgical patient safety, yes. ISO certifies management systems; JCI specifically audits clinical care, infection control and patient safety processes.

Are non-JCI hospitals unsafe?+

Not necessarily — many Turkish state hospitals deliver excellent care without paying for the audit. For elective international travel, however, the documented standard removes guesswork.

Does my surgeon's clinic need to be JCI-accredited?+

The consulting clinic does not; the operating hospital absolutely should be. Most plastic surgeons in Istanbul operate at partner hospitals rather than in-clinic.
