What standard travel insurance does not cover

Almost every mainstream travel insurance policy explicitly excludes elective medical procedures — the operation itself, anaesthesia complications, and any related readmission. Buying travel insurance for the trip is still essential (for the flight, the journey itself and non-surgical health events), but it will not cover surgical complications.

Read the policy wording carefully. Words like 'pre-existing condition', 'planned medical treatment' and 'elective procedure' all carve out exactly the situations a surgical patient might need cover for.

Surgical complication insurance — what to look for

  • Coverage amount: minimum €25,000 to be useful for a serious complication requiring readmission or repeat surgery.
  • Geographic cover: must apply both in Turkey and in your home country during the cover period.
  • Cover period: ideally 12 months post-operation, not just 30 days.
  • Revision surgery: clarify if revision for an unsatisfactory result (rather than a complication) is included — usually it is not.
  • Provider list: some insurers only cover surgery with their pre-approved surgeons.

What a serious clinic provides as aftercare

Surgical aftercare is the most overlooked variable in medical tourism. A reputable Istanbul clinic provides 24/7 direct WhatsApp contact with your surgeon for 12 months post-operatively, scheduled video reviews at week 1, week 6, month 3, month 6 and month 12, and a written discharge summary detailed enough for any doctor at home to act on.

Many serious clinics also maintain a UK or EU referral network of trusted local doctors who can perform routine wound checks, suture removal or imaging at a modest local cost, with results sent back to your Istanbul surgeon. Ask whether this referral exists before you book.

If a clinic tells you 'follow-up is by email' and offers no surgeon contact, no scheduled reviews and no referral network — that is not aftercare. It is the absence of aftercare.

SSS

Sıkça sorulan sorular

Does the NHS cover complications from surgery abroad?+

The NHS treats emergencies free of charge regardless of where surgery happened, but it does not perform routine follow-up, revision, or aesthetic correction of overseas elective work. Plan accordingly.

How much does surgical complication insurance cost?+

Specialist policies for cosmetic surgery abroad start around €100–€200 for 12 months of cover. Some Istanbul clinics include it in their package.

What if I need revision surgery?+

Reputable surgeons offer a revision policy — usually free of surgeon fees, with the patient covering hospital and anaesthesia costs, within a defined timeframe. Confirm the exact terms in writing.

Who do I call if something goes wrong at home?+

Your Istanbul surgeon first — they have full context. If urgent, your local emergency service. A good clinic will then coordinate with your local doctor for any follow-up needed.
