Clothing that respects fresh incisions

Front-opening shirts and zip-up hoodies are non-negotiable after any breast, arm or facial procedure — lifting a t-shirt overhead during the first two weeks is uncomfortable and risks straining a fresh suture line. Bring two or three loose, button-down tops and a soft cardigan.

For abdominoplasty and liposuction patients, high-waisted joggers or maternity leggings sit comfortably above the surgical garment. Avoid jeans, belts and anything with a structured waistband for at least three weeks.

Flat, slip-on shoes are essential — bending to tie laces puts pressure on the abdomen and pulls on facial swelling. Pack one pair for the hotel and one for the flight home.

Documents, medication and money

  • Passport with at least six months validity and a printed copy stored separately.
  • Travel insurance certificate (note: standard policies exclude the elective surgery itself; bring proof anyway for the flight portion).
  • Pre-operative blood test results if you have already been investigated at home.
  • A written list of current medications, allergies and prior surgeries — in English.
  • Two to three weeks of any chronic medication, in original packaging.
  • A small contactless card and around €100 in cash for taxis and incidentals.

Recovery aids worth their weight in the suitcase

A horseshoe travel pillow doubles as a sleeping aid after rhinoplasty or facelift — keeping the head elevated reduces swelling overnight. Pack two.

Unscented wet wipes, dry shampoo and a long phone charger cable make the first 48 hours in the hospital significantly easier. Hair washing is restricted for several days after facial surgery and 48 hours after most body procedures.

A reusable water bottle with a straw is invaluable after rhinoplasty when bending the head forward is uncomfortable. Hydration directly affects how quickly bruising fades.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring a compression garment?+

No. Reputable Istanbul clinics provide medical-grade compression garments fitted post-operatively. A second garment is usually included for laundering.

Can I bring my own painkillers?+

Bring paracetamol if you wish, but your surgeon will prescribe a tailored protocol. Do not take ibuprofen or any blood-thinning analgesic in the two weeks before surgery.

What should I wear on the flight home?+

Loose layers, flight compression socks (essential after any surgery) and slip-on shoes. Pack a light scarf to cover dressings discreetly.

Is there a weight limit I should respect for hand luggage?+

After breast or upper-body surgery, you should not lift more than 2 kg for three weeks. Pack accordingly and use a four-wheel spinner case so a companion can manage the load.
